Coaching

My glory days of playing competitive sports made me a life-long athlete, allowed me to develop resilience, competitive spirit, compassion, and most of all, gave me a passion for coaching. I caught the lacrosse bug the summer before my freshman year in high school, when I attended a Penn State lacrosse camp to prepare for tryouts for my high school’s large, competitive lacrosse team. Four years went by fast, and my senior year, 1989, we went undefeated at 20-0-1 and won the NJ Group IV State Championship. (I even scored 3 goals in the State Final!) and we started what was to be a successful school legacy for years to come. Being part of that winning team was formative, and our encouraging, yet demanding coaches were integral to our success, positivity, and cohesiveness. Looking back, the quality and caliber of coaching was inspirational.
I went on to play D3 women’s lacrosse at Susquehanna University from 1989-1992. The program was new and, in stark contrast with my high school experience, we were not competitive, and hardly ever won a game. Most of my teammates that first year at SU had never picked up a stick and I spent a lot of time helping them learn the rules, basic stick skills, ball movement, and gain lax IQ. It taught me how to be patient, how to lose with grace, and was probably where I caught the coaching bug.
As my daughter became interested in lacrosse and field hockey, I stepped up to coach her teams – from Kelly Post tykers rec league to high school varsity at Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Towson, MD. Over that time I have realized how truly important prepared, knowledgeable, positive, supportive coaching is to the development of children. I have always strived to bring each team and its players leadership, energy, community, positivity, physical and mental growth, a focus on positive self-image, as well as season-long team and individual improvement. Being on a field with my team is my “happy place” and I have loved every minute of it.
